Veteran Organization Southern CC Takes On Human Trafficking Awareness

Human trafficking is an issue that many in communities across the globe feel will never reach their doorstep. Veteran organization, Southern CC, Inc. has stepped up to the task of letting the community know just how real this issue is.

January 11th is recognized as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, although efforts are ongoing to help survivors throughout the year. We recently sat down with Southern CC, Inc. CEO, Tony Brown as he shared the vision behind their involvement. When asked what made his organization take on this issue, he simply stated “We partnered with Fayetteville Police Department and other human trafficking organizations to bring awareness to, and protect women in our communities.” Mr. Brown went on to share about the veteran awareness film program that gives veterans an outlet to express mental strains like PTSD and other mental health hurdles. Brown continues “We began to create films which are based on the reality of what’s happening in the world, and unfortunately, human trafficking is very much so real”.

This organization is not stopping at simply bringing attention to pressing safety concerns, but also creating safe spaces for survivors and current victims while providing key resources such as mental health services. Many of the survivors find healing in sharing their stories, which in turn helps others avoid suffering through the same terrible experiences. Southern CC is documenting the stories of survivors through film. Other efforts will also include highlighting prevention measures to help the youth protect themselves. They will learn the signs of what to look out for and techniques that just may save their lives.

One of the survivors that stepped up to share her story is Leslie Rye. Watch below to get a glimpse of what human trafficking is, and how she made it out.
